The house

A corner of nature in the city.

“A corner of nature and calm in Santa Marta. Rest, switch off and enjoy, unhurried.” That's how Musa introduces itself, and that's how it feels when you walk past reception and the garden appears.

Musa's reception: a woven-fibre desk, a polished cement wall, a wooden lattice and bougainvillea.

Why Musa paradisiaca?

Musa paradisiaca is the botanical name of the plantain: the plant with huge leaves that shades half the Caribbean coast. “Paradisiaca” means “of paradise”.

The banana leaf is this house's signature, and this website's too: torn by the wind, green, generous. One of the dorms is even called Cayeye, after the Caribbean dish of green banana.

What makes the house.

  • Brick and bougainvillea

Bare brick walls with fuchsia bougainvillea spilling over the pool.

  • Leaf-painted stones

A path of round stepping stones painted with green and blue leaves crosses the garden.

  • Garden lights

Strings of warm bulbs that turn the evening into something else.

  • Hammocks and corners

For reading, talking or doing nothing at all, which counts here too.

  • A woven reception

A woven desk, fibre lamps and a wooden lattice to welcome you.

  • People from everywhere

Couples, families, friends and solo travellers, in a sociable, easy-going atmosphere.

The garden path: round stepping stones painted with green and blue leaves, warm lights and bougainvillea beyond.
Morning in the courtyard: a guest reads in the pool beside the brick wall, under bougainvillea branches.
